Good evening, modelers and lurkers. As you may recall, on October 29th I officially announced a modeling contest sponsored here. JKFiles graciously offered to support the contest by posting an official announcement on their website and forums. As of tonight JKFiles has unfortunately changed the parameters of the contest. As these parameters were mutually agreed upon by the community, I have no intentions of changing them. As such these two contest should be considered completely independent.

So to reiterate the contest details, it shall be a modeling contest. I expect most participants will model weapons, however I am not going to restrict the contest at all so if you would like to make a player model or a map object or some other type of model please feel free. The only rules are as follows:

the model must be a Jedi Academy Mod, meaning it must be usable in game in some capacity

all content must be the original work of the author (you may and SHOULD help each other, but please don’t do work for one another)

you must, above all, have fun and not stress out!

As mentioned earlier I have not officially released a deadline. I will shoot for 01/01/2012 however with there being two major holidays between now and then we may have to consider pushing that back, which is fine. All submissions will absolutely have a place on my website so when you finish please email your mod to me so I can post them all when we’re finished. If you’d like to submit to JKFiles as well feel absolutely free.

Please feel free to continue discussing this contest in the original GameFront thread or feel absolutely free to use the comments below in this news post. Good luck, happy modding, and if you have any questions or need any help let me know!

I announced a modeling contest last week and, good to my word, I have decided that if I’m going to host it I might as well participate it in myself. Upon careful consideration I decided my entry will actually be a mod request I received a couple weeks back: the N7 Rifle which will be seen in the upcoming Mass Effect 3.

The N7 rifle appears to be slated for inclusion with the Mass Effect 3 Collector’s Edition. It definitely keeps to the Mass Effect weapon styles we’ve seen in the past so I’ve had no problems adjusting to the unique design. The rifle itself can be seen in much more detail on the Volpin Props website as it was actually created in the real world by Harrison Krix (I wonder if he’s single, by the way…). There are tons of photographs on his project, and I feel pretty good trusting his design as he was solicited by BioWare directly to make the prop.

You can see from the images that most of the modeling work is done. I’m sure I’ll add quite a bit to it before finishing up, but the major design is already mapped out. It’s poly-intensive because I’m treating it as an art project more than a mod, so that’s one thing I’m aware of but won’t be aggressively optimizing for release. Looking forward to the texture art phase!

For those of you who already visit GF you’ll know about this and I certainly expect some good submissions! For my followers who no longer visit The Pit of Doom then I expect your participation as well!

I’ll be hosting any and all submissions in a mod pack on the website here once we finish. I am not publishing a deadline yet, but I’m thinking probably not before December 1st (if not the first of the year). I won’t set a deadline folks can’t reach, because I am more interested in participation than competition! If you have any questions post here, post in the GF thread, e-mail me, stalk me, etc. I’ll be happy to answer questions, provide crits on your submission, or just chat with you (as long as I have the time).

Some time recently my Male Head Pack breached twenty-five thousand downloads on KotORFiles. Of all the mods I have ever made I never thought this would be the one that would be ridiculously popular, but I did put a lot of effort into it. Quite possibly more than any other mod I’ve made (other than Recruitable Kay, which is getting dangerously close to fifteen thousand downloads).

So here’s a big shout out to all of you who have downloaded and enjoyed the mod! In our old age we slow down, but we never quite stop modding, so I guess I’ll have to (eventually) whip up another mod to celebrate. Thanks to everyone!

As some of you have probably seen, I’ve picked up work on my Mass Effect 2 weapons. A couple of them have been newly released last week, and I’m working on finishing up the others. I am also still committed to finishing the Revenant and getting it in-game for both Jedi Academy and KotOR (be on the look out for combination packs for both!).

I have also started work on a new project — or rather restarting an old project that I never completed. It had always been my intention to make a lightsaber pack of the various different lightsaber hilts from Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. Yes, it’s been done by others. No, that isn’t going to stop me.

My objective is to make the hilts both as close to the reference material as possible as well as being as efficient as possible. I will be taking a crack at each of the hilts for the seven dark Jedi as well as Kyle’s hilt, which has been already completed. Check the image below — only about 300 polies!

If that wasn’t awesome enough, I also just whipped up the M-6 Carnifex Hand Cannon too! You can find it here!

I’ve managed to find some time to continue updating the file info pages to convert them to the new design. All the ones that have been finished so far are not available on the new mod info page (continue to use the old one, linked from the main page, for any I haven’t gotten to yet).

On the bright side, for most of the KotOR mods I have done so far and for some of the JK3 mods I have actually completely rewritten the pages in favor of being less of a snippet and more of an information-providing review. Of course there is only so much of a review you can get from the person who made the item so I’ve tried to be honest, at the very least!

Hopefully new mods will be coming this year. It’s still early, so plenty of time for me to get inspiration. However I did just obtain a lovely 24″ monitor, so I may be starting to get gamer disease… actually playing games again rather than just modding them! Time will tell. Keep pestering me for mods!

Hi guys. I know I promised updates last weekend and I’m sorry. Working and moving are both… well, we’ll stay PG for now. In any case, I’m working on getting some more of the mod pages converted. I’ll let you guys know when that’s finished, but in the mean time keep using the old mod directory that’s linked right on the main page.

I was going through a lot of the pages I was adding and I noticed how bad a lot of the screenshots were. Part of it is that I did most of my modding on my old laptop, which had laptop graphics. I don’t have that problem anymore, so I may be going back and replacing some of those screenshots (assuming, of course, that it was indeed my card and not Jedi Academy being its usual icky self).

However if you guys have screenshots of any of this stuff that you think are good and you’d like to contribute let me know! The less time I have to spend re-shotting stuff the more time I can potentially spend modding. Or playing LotRO. Or AudioSurf… yeaaaahhhhh!

So I’ve got a fraction of the file info pages converted over to the new site format (if you didn’t notice there’s a link on the front page to the original mod list — all the old pages are of course still accessible!). I’m going to be doing it in chunks, so I hope to have large chunk of the pages completed over this coming weekend, assuming I can find time between sleeping and packing.

Another thing I’d like very much to do this weekend, if I can find the time, is either start a new modeling project or continue one of the various ones that I’ve dropped in the past. Please note, this is not an invitation for requests (you can request stuff, but I probably won’t make it). You know how requests are… when I can’t even find the time to make the things I want…

However — fingers crossed! — I will have something to show this weekend. If not, well, things should pick up by the new year. I have to be moved into my new house by December 15th, and then there’s Christmas, so I have no idea where my free time will come into play. You know, because I have to pencil in time for LotRO too…

I’ve been working on updating the site (which is no simple task) and during this time I’ve had an opportunity to contemplate some things I’d like to do. I firstly have my Mass Effect Weapons project to finish which I really would like to do. I put too much effort into those to just let them sit unfinished and unused. Secondly, there are a couple of projects I’d like to redo. Things I did years ago back when I was not as experienced as I am now.

Whatever projects I decide on will have to wait a bit, being as how I’ll be moving across town by the 15th of December (and then there will be Christmas, as well). However feel free to bring on the ideas. Just please, make them practical. I am not making models of every anime character ever envisioned. In fact, I am not making models of any anime character…
