This is my third Guild Wars inspired weapon model. This time I decided to take a stab at the Dead Sword (pun 100% intended) from the Nightfall campaign. The first time I saw this sword I thought to myself “oh boy, that looks way too hard to model.” So I knew I had to do it. I should clarify that it was not really the model that was difficult, but rather the texture art that I knew would prove challenging.
Mapping out the shapes was the easy part. At that point I had never really modeled anything that was complex and organic, like a skull. Getting the look right to a lot of detail-oriented painting and while I don’t think it’s perfect, I think it’s a good effort for something new. Most of the effort was expended in the skull area, trying to give it enough depth to look realistic.
With the addition of a very slight environment shader, the sword looks pretty snazzy in-game. It’s large and unwieldy, just as it’s supposed to be. Just like the other weapons it has a few stats to keep things interesting.
